Lamento is a setting of the poem by Remco Campert. The cyclic verses — with their reps, almost repeats and their passacaglia-like rhythm — are actually music in itself: using a restrained vocabulary with great evocative power.
Campert's poem is the main guidance for the form of the piece. The endless circling of the music keeps pace with the verses: repeating and yet constantly changing, calmly undulating with the rhythm of the text, the layer of words that lets time elapse from ' here now' to 'never again'.
